Edinburgh Cottage Renovation: Transforming Space and Light

Context

Client’s testimonial: Working with our architect was transformative. Sara immediately understood the challenges we faced living in an old cottage with an awkward extension and a layout that simply didn’t flow. We found ourselves barely using the kitchen, while the basement was reduced to little more than storage. By truly listening and spending time with us, she gained a deep understanding of our lifestyle, our interests, and how we hoped to live in and use our home.

What Sara created has completely changed the way we experience the house. Relocating the staircase to the basement was a stroke of genius, and reconfiguring space from the spare room transformed the kitchen into the heart of the home we had always wanted. Importantly, she preserved the character and integrity of the original building. We now have a beautiful old cottage that not only retains its charm but finally works for modern living.

The basement was a lost space with open shelving and poor lighting. Working with our architect, we created an open area with more light from the garden, and we got to have fun and create a small wine cellar. While on the top floor, the introduction of a Juliet balcony makes the most of our views to Arthur’s seat and the Craigs.
